What are a Few of the Craziest Marriage and Divorce Laws?

Jan 06, 2015

Laws, if not updated, often end up a bit strange, even if they are not enforced. When it comes to marriage and divorce, some of the laws are quite strange. Here are some of the more odd and silly laws found around the world and in America in regards to divorce.

End your marriage by living apart

Sounds easy enough, if Eskimo people live apart then their marriage can end.

Your spouse has gone insane

If your partner has been mentally ill for at least five years and has a mental breakdown, then in New York you can divorce.  One catch, you must take care of the insane spouse even after your divorce.

A third party can be blamed

Seven states in America keep private investigators busy with the ‘alienation of affection’ theory.  If you have proof of a third party being the cause of the marriage ending you can even sue the person being accused for large monetary amounts.

Someone dared you to do it

If someone dares you to get married in Delaware and both people agree and marry on a dare then you can be granted an annulment.

If the wife doesn’t get fresh coffee she can get a divorce

In Saudi Arabia, if the husband does not provide fresh coffee this is “grounds” for divorce.  Believe it or not this law is taken seriously.

Be kind to the in-laws.

If the only reason you are getting divorced in Wichita, Kansas is because the other spouse treated their mother-in-law bad, then you won’t be allowed to get divorced.

Once, twice, three times, Yes…fourth time, No.

You think you would figure out by the second time that it wouldn’t work, but in Kentucky you can only divorce and marry the same person three times.

Ask your husband before you get false teeth

In Vermont a woman must have permission from her husband before getting false teeth.  If they do not get approval then the husband can get a divorce, of course, he doesn’t need permission though.

These are just a few of the very silly laws found throughout the world when it comes to marriage and divorce.
