Why Does Divorce Come Along With Such Emotional Pain?

Mar 21, 2014

Those that have never been through a divorce may not understand the actual emotional pain it causes. It's easy to think it's just something that happens to people, when you're on the outside looking int. However, once you go through a divorce, you fully understand the emotional pain that comes along with it.

Both men and women go through a grief stage after a divorce. They may deal with it a little bit different, but they will grieve the loss of the relationship once the papers are signed.

Many people don't realize how bad it will hurt until after it's final. It could actually take months or even a year before it hits a person the hardest.

While the divorce is in the process, it usually comes with so many legal and financial obligation people don't have time to feel the emotional hurt. However, once it ends, it will hit for many reasons including:

  • You may still love your ex-spouse - Even the person that initiates the divorce may realize they still love their ex-spouse after the divorce is final.
  • Dreams for the Future are Lost - The divorce becomes final and all the potential dreams you had with that person are gone. This can really strike somebody emotionally.
  • The Family has Broken Up - We've all heard of couples staying together for the kids and maybe you thought this was possible. However, the divorce has broken up your family and you may feel this emotionally.
  • You Feel like a Failure - Many people feel like they have failed.

All of these reasons and more can hit you like a ton of bricks once the final papers are signed and filed. Divorce is hard and the emotional pain will come, whether right after or a year later.
